Taiwan’s Lai takes office as president

Lai Ching-te took office as Taiwan’s president on Monday morning as Tsai Ing-wen, who ruled the country for the past 8 years, passed on the top post during a brief ceremony at the presidential palace.

Although Lai’s victory in the January 13 presidential election marked the first time the Democratic Progressive party has held on to power beyond the two-term limit for a president, Lai faces a challenging situation because the DPP lost its legislative majority.

Lai, denounced as a “dangerous separatist” by China, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory, will outline his government agenda in an inaugural address later on Monday morning.
